Japan Post can hold mail during a temporary absence of up to 30 days if you submit a notification of absence, called a fuzai todoke (不在届), in advance. The important limitation is that it covers the home as a whole: you cannot select just your own name while a housemate stays there. This guide is based on official documents checked on 7 October 2026; it is not an account of a tested application. Japan Post’s absence-hold FAQ
Check the household before choosing the dates
The hold cannot be restricted to particular household members or categories of mail. Japan Post also says that if it becomes clear during the hold that someone in the household is at home, it will deliver all the held items. That includes people living with you, not only relatives. Japan Post’s household conditions
Use these hypothetical situations to decide whether the service fits your plan:
| Your situation | Planning consequence |
|---|---|
| Everyone leaves for the same 20-day trip | A household hold may fit; check special deadlines on expected items |
| You leave for 20 days, but a housemate remains home | Do not plan on a hold for your name alone |
| Everyone leaves, but one person returns early | Recheck the arrangement with the delivering office |
| The home will be empty for 35 days | A single hold does not cover the whole absence |
These are decision examples, not approvals of individual applications. Discuss the household schedule before visiting the post office, especially when people leave and return on different days.
Prepare the notice before you travel
Japan Post’s English practical guide, question 4 confirms that a notice should be submitted in advance at a local post office and that identification is required. The detailed Japanese FAQ allows submission to the office delivering to your home or the nearest post office.
You can obtain the form at a post office or print the official notification of absence. It has fields for your address, name, telephone number and the start and end of the absence. Complete the customer portion; leave the section marked for post office use to staff.
Prepare your dates and identification together. The FAQ gives a My Number Card and driver’s licence as examples. If you intend to use a different document, confirm its acceptance with the office rather than treating this short list as a complete identification policy.
Japan Post sends an acceptance-confirmation notice to the home after the application. Allow time for the advance process; this guide does not establish a guaranteed same-day activation time. No form was submitted during this research.
Thirty days is a maximum, not a new deadline for every item
The official form explains that mail with a holding period already set by the sender is kept only until that period ends. A household hold therefore does not extend every item’s deadline to the end of your trip. Conditions on the official form
Suppose, hypothetically, you are away for 20 days and expect an item with an earlier sender-set deadline. Putting the trip inside the 30-day maximum does not resolve that item’s timing. Before departure, ask the sender about when it will be sent and the applicable receipt deadline. That is more useful than discovering the conflict after returning.
This notice also should not be treated as a retroactive extension for an item already waiting after a missed delivery. For an existing delivery notice, use its reference number and contact the handling office about that item.
Plan for delivery after the hold ends
The form says held mail is delivered the day after the hold expires. If that is a day on which delivery is not performed, delivery follows on the next applicable delivery day. Do not promise yourself that every item will be waiting in the letterbox the moment you arrive home. Official form: delivery after the holding period
Keep three separate entries in your travel notes: the household’s actual return date, the requested hold end date, and any earlier item-specific deadline. Check them together before submitting the notice. A temporary absence hold is a way to manage an empty home’s incoming Japan Post mail; arrangements for other carriers, trips longer than the maximum and particular deadline-sensitive items need separate confirmation.
