Japan Post delivers some services on weekends, but not ordinary letters as a general rule. Letter Pack, registered mail and Yu-Pack have weekend delivery; an ordinary stamped letter does not gain weekend delivery simply because you posted it at an open counter.

This guide covers domestic delivery in Japan. Rules were checked against Japan Post’s official guidance on October 1, 2026. International transit and destination-country schedules are separate questions.

Identify the service before checking the day

Domestic service Saturday, Sunday and public-holiday delivery
Ordinary letters and postcards Generally no
Ordinary nonstandard-size mail Generally no
Tokutei Kiroku (特定記録), without an additional service changing the delivery treatment No
Express (速達) Yes
Registered or simplified registered (書留・簡易書留) Yes
Letter Pack Light and Plus Yes
Yu-Pack and Yu-Packet Yes

Japan Post’s delivery-time guidance lists these distinctions. Its weekend FAQ also notes the January 1 exception to the ordinary-mail rule and includes Click Post among weekend-delivered services.

“Yes” means that the service has delivery on those days. It does not mean an item posted on Friday is guaranteed to arrive on Saturday. Origin, destination, acceptance time and transport conditions still matter.

Tracking alone does not answer the weekend question

Tokutei Kiroku and Letter Pack are a useful contrast: the former is listed among services without ordinary weekend delivery, while both Letter Pack types are listed for weekend delivery. Do not use “has a number” as a substitute for reading the service name on your receipt or packaging.

If an institution requires a particular mailing method, keep that requirement in the decision. Choosing a service because it delivers on Sunday is not enough if it does not meet the office’s instructions for the documents. Our A4 document guide compares ways to send folded and unfolded documents.

Posting, collection and delivery are three different events

Imagine putting a letter into a postbox on Saturday evening. The time you insert it is the posting event. The next collection is a separate event, and the eventual delivery follows the service’s schedule. This is an illustrative timeline, not a delivery estimate for a particular route.

Read the collection times displayed on the postbox, including the relevant day column. If you are using a counter instead, ask about acceptance for the service and destination you need. An open building or an available slot in a postbox cannot, on its own, establish when the item will enter transport.

This distinction also explains why “I sent it before the weekend” is too imprecise for planning. Record the service, origin and destination postal codes, and when the item will actually be handed over or collected.

Use a route estimate, then check the deadline wording

Use Japan Post’s official delivery-day search, linked from its delivery guidance, for the route and service you plan to use. Read the assumptions with the result. Japan Post warns that weather and road conditions can delay delivery; Light can also take about an extra day compared with Plus depending on delivery circumstances.

For an application, check whether the recipient means must arrive by the deadline or postmarked by it. The institution’s own instructions decide this. Do not substitute a tracking acceptance time for a required postmark or an arrival requirement without checking.

Suppose an office needs documents by Monday. Sending an ordinary letter on Friday is not enough information to promise Monday arrival. A weekend-delivered service may offer a different route estimate, but you still need to confirm the office can receive the item and that the chosen service meets its requirements.

If you are waiting for a delivery

Check the sender’s stated service first. If there is a tracking reference, inspect its actual status rather than assuming that the weekend caused a delay. An attempted delivery and an item still in transit call for different actions.

If a missed-delivery notice has already arrived, use our Japan Post redelivery guide to choose between home redelivery and collection. Weekend delivery does not extend the holding deadline printed on that notice.
