Ordinary domestic Yu-Pack has a compensation limit of ¥300,000. If you want a higher limit for an eligible item worth ¥400,000, Japan Post’s security service is the relevant option to discuss before posting: the declared compensation amount can be up to ¥500,000 and cannot exceed the contents’ current value. This is a ceiling on compensation, not a promise to pay the amount printed on the label. Japan Post: Yu-Pack compensation · Security service

Separate the value of the contents from the amount of damage

Japan Post describes security-service compensation as actual loss, in principle within the declared compensation amount. Ordinary Yu-Pack is also described as compensation for actual loss, subject to the ¥300,000 ceiling. A broken item does not automatically produce a payout equal to the maximum. For planning, keep three figures separate:

FigureWhat it helps you decide
Current value of the contentsWhether the ordinary ceiling leaves a value gap
Declared compensation amountThe amount you request when arranging security service, within the allowed limits
Actual loss in an incidentThe loss Japan Post would need to assess; it is not automatically the first two figures

An old purchase receipt and a current-value estimate need not show the same amount. Do not choose the declaration simply by copying the highest number you have. Ask what information is needed to support the value of your particular contents before handing over the parcel.

Work through a hypothetical ¥400,000 parcel

Suppose an otherwise eligible used camera has a current value of ¥400,000. This is an invented example, not an appraisal or a shipment we made.

The gap between that value and the ordinary ¥300,000 ceiling is ¥100,000: ¥400,000 − ¥300,000. If you want the declared amount to reflect the full assumed current value, discuss security service with a ¥400,000 declaration rather than assuming ordinary tracking supplies the higher limit.

Now suppose the camera suffers damage assessed at ¥60,000. The declaration does not turn that smaller loss into a ¥400,000 payment. Conversely, if the item were worth ¥600,000, the security-service ceiling would still leave ¥100,000 above the ¥500,000 maximum. Both calculations compare limits; neither determines whether an actual claim will be accepted or how much will be paid.

This example concerns an ordinary consumer item. Special categories of valuables can have additional requirements, so do not use the value calculation alone as an acceptance test.

Choose the acceptance point before travelling

Security service uses a dedicated label and is accepted at a post-office counter or through pickup. Japan Post expressly excludes convenience stores and other handling shops for this option. A shop that takes ordinary Yu-Pack is therefore not necessarily a place to arrange the protection you need. Japan Post: how to use security service

Prepare the contents description, the value you intend to declare and the parcel itself before approaching the appropriate counter. A useful question is: “I want to send this item by Yu-Pack with security service. Its current value is approximately ¥400,000. What should I confirm before declaring that amount?” This wording is an editorial example, not an official form.

The service carries an additional charge. This guide does not quote a total shipping price: the parcel’s base fare and any applicable options must be calculated for the actual shipment. Do not confuse the extra service charge with buying an unconditional payout.

Decide what remains unacceptable to lose

For a replaceable item, a value limit can be a useful comparison. For a unique item, a monetary ceiling cannot tell you whether you are comfortable sending it at all. Write down what you would need to replace and what could not be replaced, then decide whether posting is appropriate.

This is desk research based on Japan Post’s published explanations, not a claim-handling review or an appraisal. It does not decide eligibility for particular contents, packing compliance or liability in an actual incident. Recheck the service conditions when you send, especially if the contents are valuables subject to special rules.
