A lithium-powered laptop or similar device is not automatically eligible for air transport just because it is inside a Yu-Pack box. Japan Post says domestic Yu-Pack items containing lithium-ion or lithium-metal batteries can travel by air to air-served regions only when the applicable transport conditions are met. If the conditions are unmet or unclear, delivery may take about one to four days longer. Check the device, battery arrangement and destination before promising an arrival date. This guide is desk research, not a shipment test. Japan Post: lithium batteries in Yu-Pack

Separate three questions before you pack
First, identify what is actually in the parcel: a device with its battery installed, a battery packed with equipment, or a battery on its own. These are different arrangements. Japan Post’s domestic Yu-Pack FAQ links to a handling flow chart and detailed conditions for air transport. It also notes a condition added for lithium-ion batteries packed with equipment from December 31, 2025: for that arrangement’s air transport, state of charge must be no more than 30% of rated capacity. Do not apply that condition to every battery arrangement without checking the chart. Japan Post: lithium handling FAQ and flow chart
Second, check whether the destination is on Japan Post’s airborne-region list for Yu-Pack. The air-transport question matters particularly for those routes. Third, confirm the exact transport conditions, required declaration and mark with Japan Post for your particular item. The official FAQ links the current flow chart, detail sheet and lithium-battery mark. A vague contents description such as “electronics” does not establish that your parcel meets them. | What you know | What you can conclude | What remains to check |
|---|---|---|
| Device contains a lithium battery | Air transport has conditions | Battery arrangement, flow-chart result, marking |
| Device has had its battery removed | It is a different contents case | Describe the device and absence of lithium battery accurately |
| Destination is air-served | A non-air route may affect timing | Whether this particular parcel qualifies for air transport |
Japan Post’s English FAQ says a Yu-Pack containing only devices without lithium batteries should give the product name and indicate “Without Lithium Battery” in the contents field. Use that only if it is true. Japan Post: domestic English FAQ, lithium-battery conditions

Why service choice matters
Japan Post’s English FAQ distinguishes Yu-Pack from other domestic mail formats for air transport of lithium battery items. It says lithium battery items can be transported by air under its conditions only as Yu-Pack, not as ordinary postal items, Letter Pack, Smart Letter, Yu-Mail or Yu-Packet. That does not mean every battery is accepted for every Yu-Pack route or that all non-air alternatives are available. Resolve eligibility with the postal counter and the linked handling chart before selecting a service. Japan Post: air-transport conditions 1–3
Here is a hypothetical planning case. You need to send a used laptop from mainland Japan to an island and the recipient expects it in two days. The laptop’s battery is installed, but you have not checked its specifications or the Japan Post flow chart. You can identify the parcel and destination, but you cannot yet promise air carriage or a two-day arrival. Check the battery details, complete the required declaration and mark if applicable, and ask the counter about the route. If the air conditions cannot be confirmed, plan for the official one-to-four-day possible delay. No actual laptop was shipped for this article.
What this guide cannot determine from a product name
“Laptop,” “camera” or “power bank” does not tell you the cell count, watt-hours, packing arrangement or state of charge. Those facts can change the transport decision. This article also does not cover international mail: Japan Post points to separate international restrictions. If you have a damaged battery, a loose battery or uncertain labeling, do not improvise a declaration; take the exact specifications to Japan Post for the applicable handling instructions. No delivery date, acceptance decision or price can be confirmed without the actual parcel and route.
