You cannot add tracking or express service to Japan Post’s Smart Letter. If either is essential, choose a different service before sealing the envelope. A small item that fits inside is not automatically a good match for the service: the delivery record and deadline matter too. Japan Post: Smart Letter

Check the service you need before the package size

Smart Letter is a domestic prepaid envelope service described as A5 size. It is delivered to the recipient’s mailbox, has no tracking, and is not delivered on Saturdays, Sundays or holidays. Japan Post also states that it provides no compensation for loss or damage in transit. Official service description and cautions

Start with the recipient’s requirements. If an office asks for a tracking number, a photograph of your addressed envelope will not create one. If you need a delivery record, selecting a service with that feature is a separate decision from whether the contents fit.

Do not choose Smart Letter for an irreplaceable item simply because it is thin. The official conditions ask senders to avoid fragile goods, precision devices, perishables and difficult-to-replace artworks; cash, valuables and dangerous goods are prohibited. Japan Post: conditions

Extra stamps do not buy an upgrade

There is one important distinction: Japan Post allows an old-rate Smart Letter envelope to be used by adding stamps for the difference up to ¥210. That is a postage adjustment, not a way to add tracking, express handling or extra thickness. The service still has the same limits. Old-rate envelope rule

For a hypothetical envelope bearing ¥180, the difference is ¥210 − ¥180 = ¥30. Adding those stamps addresses the old postage amount only. It does not turn the envelope into a Letter Pack or registered letter.

Measure the finished envelope

Smart Letter has limits of 2cm thickness and 1kg weight. Measure with all packaging included. The conditions also prohibit substantially torn envelopes and envelopes that have been cut or otherwise modified. Reinforcing tape must not cover the printed postage indicium. Packing and acceptance conditions

These hypothetical cases show why weight alone is not enough:

If the thickest point is uncertain, have the prepared item checked at a post office before posting. Do not remove necessary protection simply to make a borderline measurement pass.

Choose the replacement by the missing feature

Japan Post directs senders who need tracking toward services such as Letter Pack or registered mail. Letter Pack Light uses mailbox delivery; Plus uses hand delivery with a receipt stamp or signature. Letter Pack still does not include loss or damage compensation. A tracking number is therefore not the same thing as insurance. Japan Post: Letter Pack

For an urgent or valuable item, explain the actual requirement at the counter before choosing packaging. “I need a tracking number” and “I need compensation if this is lost” are different requests. If an institution specifies a particular service, match that instruction instead of assuming all recorded services are interchangeable.

This guide is desk research of Japan Post’s published rules, not a test shipment. It does not establish a delivery date or a specific item’s acceptance. The useful stopping point is a service that fits both the packed item and the record you need.
